Wheelchair Ramp Winter Safety Tips

I have taken some calls in the past few weeks with people telling me how slippery their ramps are with all the snow we have had lately.

The first thing everyone needs to understand is that a ramp is a walkway on an incline. It is no different than trying to walk up or down a snow covered sidewalk or driveway that is on an incline EXCEPT that ramps sometimes have a steeper incline. The steeper the incline, the more slippery the ramp is going to be.

Winter Ramp Safety Tips

  • Shovel the snow off of the ramp
  • Sweep the ramp with a stiff bristled broom
  • Use ice melt on the ramp (Use Calcium Chloride pellets - It's not as messy as salt and not as corrosive)
  • If it is very cold out, try mixing sand with the ice melt (The same mixture that is put on the road ways)

On wooden ramps, which are often the most slippery, cover it with some inexpensive outdoor carpeting.  You can also cover it with rolled roofing like my Dad did on my older brother's ramp on the house I grew up in. It did help a lot, but as kids, my younger brother and I did tear up some knees and elbows on it (I think my kids did too when they went to see Grandma).

Most Aluminum Ramps are probably the least slippery because of their ribbed surface, but they still need to be kept clean.
